Planning Engagement Photos in Chicago

If you are recently engaged and dreaming about engagement photos in Chicago, one of the first decisions you will need to make is where to take them.

Chicago has an incredible variety of photo locations. You can have skyline views, lakefront beaches, beautiful gardens, iconic architecture, or charming neighborhoods all within a short distance of each other.

As a wedding photographer who regularly photographs engagement sessions in the city, I have seen how the right location can completely shape the feel of your photos. Some spots are perfect for dramatic skyline views. Others feel quiet, romantic, and tucked away.

The goal of this guide is to help you narrow down the best Chicago engagement photo locations so you can choose a setting that truly fits you as a couple.

One thing I intentionally focused on in this guide is highlighting iconic and versatile Chicago locations rather than listing every possible spot in the city. These are places that consistently photograph beautifully and give couples a variety of backdrops during their session.

How to Choose the Right Chicago Engagement Photo Location

Before selecting a location, it can be helpful to think about the overall style you want for your engagement photos.

Some couples love the dramatic skyline views you get along Lake Michigan. Others prefer the greenery and quieter atmosphere of parks like Lincoln Park. Some couples are drawn to classic Chicago architecture and the energy of downtown streets.

There is no single “best” location for everyone. The right choice usually comes down to the atmosphere you want your photos to have and which areas of the city feel meaningful or exciting to you as a couple.

North Avenue Beach

North Avenue Beach is one of the most iconic engagement photo locations in Chicago.

The biggest draw here is the sweeping skyline view across Lake Michigan. When you stand on the beach and look toward the city, the skyline rises beautifully behind the water, which creates a classic Chicago backdrop. If you’d like to see what a full session here can look like, you can also view this North Avenue Beach and Lincoln Park engagement session.

This location is especially great for couples who want dramatic skyline views with a relaxed lakefront atmosphere.

From a photography standpoint, this location works best around sunrise or sunset. The softer light reflects off the water and gives the skyline a warm glow. I usually recommend scheduling the session about two hours before sunset to make sure we get the best light.

One thing couples should know is that North Avenue Beach can be busy during the summer months. The crowds are part of the energy of Chicago, but if you prefer something quieter, early mornings can be a great alternative.

Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk

Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk is one of my favorite spots in the city because it offers a really unique combination of nature and skyline views.

The wooden boardwalk curves along the water with tall grasses and trees surrounding it. From certain angles you can see the Chicago skyline rising behind the park, which creates a really beautiful balance of city and nature.

This location is perfect for couples who want a softer, more natural look while still including the skyline.

There are also several nearby spots that photograph beautifully.

The honeycomb structure near Lincoln Park Conservatory is a very recognizable Chicago photo location. The limestone bridge and surrounding gardens add a soft, romantic feel. The Lincoln Park Conservatory itself offers a stunning indoor option if you want greenery year round.

Because there are several photo spots within walking distance, this location works really well for couples who want a variety of looks during their engagement session.

The Honeycomb Pavilion in Lincoln Park is another beautiful hidden gem. The unique architecture makes it a favorite spot for couples who want something a little different than the typical skyline backdrop. You can see a full engagement session at the Honeycomb Pavilion here.

Art Institute of Chicago South Gardens

The South Gardens at the Art Institute of Chicago are one of the most elegant engagement photo locations in the city.

The gardens sit just behind the museum and feature a beautiful reflecting fountain surrounded by trees and stone pathways. When the light filters through the trees in the afternoon, it creates a really soft and romantic look in photos. If you’d like to see what a session here can look like, you can also view a full Art Institute South Garden engagement session.

This location is ideal for couples who want a classic, refined Chicago backdrop with greenery and architecture.

One important thing couples should know is that the garden hours can be a little unpredictable. Even when the Art Institute itself is open, the South Gardens are sometimes closed. Because of that, I always check the schedule in advance when planning a session there.

You can also take photos inside the Art Institute if you purchase museum tickets, which can be a great option during colder months.

Chicago Riverwalk and the Wrigley Building

If you want your engagement photos to feel unmistakably Chicago, the Chicago Riverwalk is a great option.

One of the most popular spots is near the Wrigley Building and the Michigan Avenue bridge. Standing on the bridge gives you a beautiful view of the river with historic buildings surrounding you.

This area is especially great for couples who want classic Chicago architecture and a vibrant city atmosphere.

From there, you can walk down to the Riverwalk and photograph along the water. The mix of architecture, reflections on the river, and city energy creates a really dynamic backdrop.

This area can definitely be busy, but sometimes that is part of what makes Chicago engagement sessions so fun. The movement of the city adds a sense of life and excitement to the photos.

Milton Lee Olive Park

Milton Lee Olive Park is a hidden gem for skyline photos.

The park sits just north of Navy Pier and offers one of the most beautiful skyline views in Chicago without the same level of crowds you might find at North Avenue Beach.

The long walkway lined with trees leads directly toward the skyline, which creates a dramatic perspective in photos. It is especially beautiful during golden hour when the light hits the buildings from the west.

For couples who want that classic skyline look but with a quieter, more relaxed setting, this is one of my favorite recommendations.

Museum Campus

Museum Campus is another incredible location for engagement photos with a skyline view.

This area near the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium has a sweeping view of the Chicago skyline across the water. It is one of the most dramatic skyline perspectives in the city.

This spot is perfect for couples who want wide open skyline views and a more expansive backdrop.

Because the space is wide open, it works especially well during sunset when the sky begins to change colors behind the buildings.

It is also relatively easy to combine this location with nearby spots for additional variety during a session.

Beautiful Chicago Neighborhoods

Some of the most romantic engagement photos in Chicago are not necessarily at famous landmarks.

Neighborhoods like the West Loop, Gold Coast, or tree lined residential streets can create a really timeless feel. Beautiful brownstones, charming sidewalks, and cozy cafes often make photos feel more intimate and personal.

These areas are also great if you want engagement photos that feel more like a relaxed date night around the city rather than a formal photo shoot.

Indoor Engagement Photo Locations in Chicago

Chicago winters can be beautiful, but they can also be very cold.

One advantage of engagement sessions is that we can plan around the weather in a way you cannot on a wedding day. If possible, I usually recommend scheduling engagement photos sometime between spring and fall when the weather is more comfortable.

That said, there are still great indoor options if you need to shoot in winter.

Historic buildings like the Rookery Building are popular for their stunning architecture. Cocktail bars can create a cozy, romantic atmosphere. Studio spaces such as The Chicago Studio can also be rented for a clean, editorial look.

Sometimes we even combine indoor and outdoor locations so couples can stay warm early in the session and finish outside at sunset.

Timing Your Chicago Engagement Session

Timing is one of the most important parts of planning a great engagement session.

In Chicago, the tall buildings can block the sun earlier than expected. Because of that, I usually recommend starting engagement sessions about two hours before sunset, sometimes even a little earlier depending on the location.

That gives us time to explore different spots while still capturing the best golden hour light.

Some locations like the Riverwalk or North Avenue Beach can also be much busier at certain times of day. Planning the timing carefully can make a big difference in how relaxed the session feels.

Do You Need a Permit for Engagement Photos in Chicago?

Some Chicago locations require photography permits depending on the location and type of session.

Parks, museums, and certain indoor spaces may have specific rules or reservation systems for photography. Because these policies occasionally change, it is always a good idea to check in advance or work with a photographer who is familiar with the area.

Final Thoughts

Chicago is one of the most beautiful cities in the country for engagement photos. From skyline views along the lake to quiet neighborhood streets, there are endless ways to create photos that feel uniquely like you.
